As the holidays approach, working out can be more difficult with all the errands to run and preparing for family to come over. It’s easy to score some “extra credit” by working these 7 simple tricks into your day.

1. GET A LOT OF SLEEP

When you’re short on sleep, it’s easy to lean on a large latte to get moving. You might be tempted to skip exercise, get takeout for dinner, and take the elevator instead of the stairs.  Sleep helps your muscles recover, gives you more energy, and gives you more will power to say no to that extra cookie.

2. DO SOME SQUATS WHILE ON THE PHONE

Next time you have to dial in, do it from your cell phone so you can move around. Do squats. Bend your knees to 90 degrees and scoot your butt back to avoid your knees going over your toes. Another lower body exercise you can do while on a short call is calf raises.

3. EXERCISE WHILE SITTING

While you are sitting at your desk, contract your core. This little isometric exercise will strengthen your core.  To contract your abs, pretend like someone is about to punch you in the stomach. Pull the abdominals in towards your spine. Hold this for as long as you can and repeat. Aim for 30 seconds each time. This gets you a nice little core workout without even getting up.

4. GET YOUR HEART RATE UP

Being busy isn’t an excuse to limit exercise, especially if you’re sitting all day. Try to squeeze in a few jump squats every time you get up to get coffee or a snack to get your heart rate up.

5. “RUN” YOUR ERRANDS

After leaving the office, turn your list of errands into a little bonus fitness time. Leave a pair of sneakers in your car, and get your heart rate up as you walk between stores. If you’re driving, park in the farthest spot and use a shopping basket instead of a cart to score a little extra strength training and steps as you walk back to the car.

6. IGNORE THE ESCALATOR

When available, always take the stairs. If an escalator is the only option, don’t take an easy ride, pretend they are stairs.

7. BURN YOUR BUNS WHILE BRUSHING YOUR TEETH

Before you turn in, there’s one last chance to score some extra credit. Do wall sits as you brush your teeth. Sink down into a squat position against the wall with your knees at 90 degrees. Hold it there as you brush your teeth for one minute.
